Yes, that is something I always loved about the Valdemar books. It's not that they don't have issues, far from it. But there is a deep acceptance of all sorts of different ways of life. Different races, religions, genders, orientations, relationship styles. I remember the soulbound almost-triad in Arrows of the Queen, which ended tragically... but if I recall the two remaining characters ended up in another triad later.
I remember reading on her site that she has a trans character in Valdemar, but she hasn't come out and said which. This was in her old Firebird Q&A posts that were mostly done in the 90s/early 00s. She made a comment about not being able to sell a trans protagonist, which was (sadly) quite likely true at the time, but people are raging as if it were posted recently, which it was not. Unfortunately, with that out there, she's pretty well stuck because taking it down now won't do any good. And, well, there's also the utter trans fail in her Diana Tregarde story.
Valdemar, though... well. Valdemar sounded like Heaven to me, especially as a young teen who just wanted to be accepted.
