stormerider suggested looking into a Stylish (css modding tool; there are versions for Chrome and Firefox, dunno about other browsers) mod for fixing the comment pages in the interim.

LJ Easier Read changes the font back to Verdana and back to an acceptable size and spacing. LJ Flat Colors changes the colors back to what they used to be.

It is not absolutely perfect. There is still a little too much white space. However, it helps a lot (for me at least), and I'm hoping will reduce my headache/migraine issues. I am at least so far dealing with less eyestrain from the size and spacing of the font.

(I am still not going to be paying for LJ after this, but this hopefully will mean I'll be able to continue reading communities that are using the new comments page instead of switching to a static layout.)
