Oh, dear Freddie. *shudders* Thanks for sharing that. I knew some people went through their old crap in order to get a virtue high, but I didn't realize it was that bad.
I don't want to generalize too much, because of how hugely things vary by region, but people in a position to donate to food banks really need to know: GIVE THEM MONEY. They have more buying power than you do, and they can buy more rational things. Your ten bucks goes WAY farther than ten bucks of groceries.
And none of that begins to touch how we shouldn't ever be expecting random donations to stand in for our tattered social safety net. :(
