Yeah, I've known people who have not taken a job or such because either social assistance or unemployment paid more than they would if they worked. It's really fucked up how little so many jobs pay. I used to waitress, and my take-home for a month was like... $500. I was having to call out because of illness, plus was part time, but still... it was ridiculous.
Somebody on a friend's journal (who reposted this) mentioned that donating money to food banks rather than food is more useful because usually food banks have deals with groceries or companies to get food for cheaper than retail. I had never heard of that before, and didn't really even know you could do that. But it would be a WAY better option than giving expired food, ffs. Just because people are poor doesn't mean they deserve to be eating things that are expired.
