I read an article sometime in the past year or so in which a Famous Female Author* talked about men she sees at holiday parties who will ask her, "So, are you still writing?" As if it's just a hobby. As if it's something she might stop at any time, on a whim, and go do something else instead. She said that she's thought about responding with, "So, are you still a doctor/lawyer/executive/whatever?" but has never actually done so. Yet.
* I don't remember who, but someone on the level of Danielle Steele -- someone who has been writing full-time for a living for decades, whose books generally make the NYT best-seller list, who probably makes more money from her writing in a year than the salary of the man she's talking to.
